November is Epilepsy Awareness Month

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month (NEAM).  The Epilepsy Foundation Western/Central PA (EFWCP) has a busy schedule of educational events and awareness activities scheduled at all three of its offices: Johnstown, Harrisburg, and Pittsburgh.  Also don’t forget to check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest during the month of November for daily posts!


The EFWCP announces its Scholarship Program.  Now in its 13th year, the EFWCP offers one $2,500 scholarship and five $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors living with epilepsy/seizure disorders who live in western/central Pennsylvania.  For additional information, contact Francine Reyher at 800-361-5885 or email


Throughout the month, various buildings will be lit purple for epilepsy awareness.  The Hershey Medical Center will be lit purple the first week of the month thanks to Jennifer Faust of Hummelstown. The Stone Bridge in Johnstown will be purple throughout the month thanks to the Lewis family.  And the center part of the Capitol Building in Harrisburg will be purple throughout the month thanks to Gretchen Knaub and Lori Sherlock.


On Saturday November 2, there is a special event on the Gateway Clipper in Pittsburgh for adults with Epilepsy.  This is the 12th year for the cruise, and Carol Schramke, PhD. from AGH will be on hand to discuss epilepsy and answer questions about seizures, mood and the use of cognitive behavioral therapies to help cope with the challenges of living with seizures.  For more information contact Francine Reyher at 800-361-5885 or email

On November 9, the EFWCP Harrisburg Office presents the Annual Epilepsy Mini Conference.  Held at the York Hospital Medical Education Pavilion from 9 am to noon, the conference offers speakers on Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP), Living with Epilepsy, and Seizure Tracker.  For more information, contact Gretchen Knaub at 717-541-0301 or


Also on November 9, the 2013 Mini Conference will be held in Erie, at the Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel from 11:30am – 3:30pm.  The conference will include sessions on Epilepsy 101: An overview of Epilepsy and Seizures; Affordable Care Act 101: What it is, How it Works, and what it means for You; All About the EFWCP: Programs, Services, and How We Can Help, and special guest speakers Jason and Sarah O’Neill will talk about the #AJO movement.  For more information contact Andrea Zonneveld at 800-361-5885 or


On November 16, the EFWCP will be at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium from 11am-3pm with Radio Disney to celebrate the polar bears birthdays, and to pass out information on epilepsy and seizure disorders.  Purple party hats with EFWCP’s information on them will be distributed to folks who drop by the table.


From November 22 through the 30th, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh will feature "Landscapes of Epilepsy" a display of art pieces done by persons with epilepsy, on their downstairs gallery wall.
